Chapter 5. How to build graph visualizations

This chapter covers

  • Designing graphics with your user in mind
  • Using visual properties to represent data on a graph
  • Using size and color
  • Styling links
  • Determining how much data to put on the graph

Because graph data analytics, data visualization, and data modeling are technical subjects, often performed by data scientists, engineers, and application developers, the design of the information and how it’s presented to the end user are often an afterthought. This is disappointing, because a poorly designed visualization can often derail the entire project. Take a look at the graph in figure 5.1 from NodeXL (the full-color one is available in the eBook and here: http://mng.bz/2iy7).
