CHAPTER 3
The Opportunity: Visuals
The aim of this chapter is to explore why visuals matter in portfolio decisions. The chapter is divided into four parts. The first part delves into the portfolio decision process as a sensemaking process. The second part discusses why visuals are powerful sensemaking aids. It starts with a definition of the term visual and its key features, then explores why these features can aid the sensemaking process, in particular communication and cognition, and discusses how visuals can address portfolio decision complexity. The third part points out challenges related to visuals. In the fourth and last part, we introduce the concept of visual literacy and its importance, and refine the goals of the study.
