Chapter 3. Installation

Installing or upgrading ESX and ESXi host software can take about 20 minutes depending on the hardware involved. However, it takes a lot longer to plan the steps we need to take before we start installing. With proper planning, we can avoid the costly mistake of finding out much later we did not really want to boot from the SAN or that the file system size for root or for log messages is too small and end up reinstalling and starting over again. See the section “Example 4: Office in a Box,” in Chapter 1, “System Considerations,” for a case where changes were necessary that could equate to needing to start over.
