This chapter covers VMware High Availability (HA). VMware HA has a very simple goal: when an ESX host crashes, so do the VMs on the failed host. However, within seconds, the other ESX hosts in the same HA cluster detect that the ESX host has failed, and they move the VMs that were once running on the failed ESX host onto the remaining functioning hosts and power them on. If DRS is enabled, it will then rebalance the cluster. DRS will also detect when the failed host is available again and rebalance the cluster.
