THE H.323 PROTOCOL STACK

H.323 consists of several standards, and cites the use of others, as shown in Figure 9-4. For audio applications, G.711 is required, and other G Series recommendations are options. However, the preference in recent commercial products is not G.711, because of its 64 kbit/s-bandwidth requirement.

The video standards are H.261 and H.263. Data support is through T.120, and the various control, signaling, and maintenance operations are provided by H.245, Q.931, and the Gatekeeper specification.
