Corporations weren't created to do good—much less send their employees out to volunteer on company time. Rather, companies were created to maximize shareholder returns. Right or wrong, this fundamental raison d'être is written into the DNA of corporations and inevitably influences their relationship with the social sector.

The responsibility of the social sector, on the other hand, is to organize and harness available resources to address social and environmental concerns—resources that are usually so scarce as to cripple our ability to respond to these challenges effectively.
