In Chapter 1 we described the network realm as a force field where some forces amplify one another while others act against one another. This dual-faced relationship is most visible in the security aspect of the networking. On the one hand, all aspects of networking, forwarding, control, and management require security. We expect the secure performance of these functions. On the other hand, security restrictions bring some new challenges into the picture. With access control mechanisms in place, manageability may become more difficult to achieve; security policies may interfere with the redundancy schemes for availability.
