We start our discussion of normative aspects of the VRRP protocol by focusing on prohibitions, obligations, and permissions related to master and backup roles. While doing this, we use the deontic operator introduced in Section E.2.

For our discussion we use the following naming conventions for our variables:

a, and its subscripted variants range over the addresses (IP, MAC).
