Chapter 4. VRRP in Action

This chapter begins by describing the behavior of VRRP, detailing it as a state machine and visiting each state separately. After giving an informal overview of the state machine, it reviews each state in detail and finally summarizes the basic characteristics of the machine using some elementary formalism from discrete mathematics. Section 4.2.5 provides a quick overview of the utilized formalism used. Afterwards we walk through the state machine using two simple scenarios in order to give the readers a better feel for the internal workings of the protocol.
