10.1. Cisco's HSRP
Cisco's Hot Standby Routing Protocol (HSRP) is a proprietary protocol that provides automatic router backup over IP on any Cisco router with Ethernet, FDDI, or Token Ring interfaces. Like VRRP, HSRP allows one router to assume the function of the second router if the second router fails.
In HSRP, multiple routers work as one virtual or phantom router, and this group of multiple routers is called an HSRP group or standby group. Figure 10-1 shows an example of an HSRP group made up of three routers, all of them running the HSRP protocol.
