10.2. Digital Equipment Corporation's IP Standby Protocol
IP Standby Protocol (IPSTB) (see Higginson [1997] for specifics) has been developed as part of a solution to respond to a customer request, requiring a router failover mechanism to reduce the loss of service below 5 seconds. To fulfill the customer's requirement, a group of engineers from Digital Equipment Corporation devised a set of mechanisms to address different forms of network failures. They designed IPSTB as one of the mechanisms to deal with a specific failure type.
