What Exactly Is WAP, Anyway?
Now that we’ve examined the WAP-enabled devices that are your development environment, let’s focus now on what exactly WAP does.
WAP is the technology this book uses to develop wireless applications. It is a set of protocols (more on these in a second), which are rules that designate how computers should interpret WAP data.
WAP was developed by the WAP Forum, a consortium that consists of some of the world’s largest wireless vendors and manufactures, such as Siemens, Nortel, Lucent, Vodaphone, Motorola, Nokia, and Ericsson to name a few. Today, more than 500 companies have joined the group, which is responsible for defining WAP’s standards. To find out more about the WAP Forum, go to www.wapforum.org.
