Databases are similar to a powerful electronic filing cabinet. At their most basic level, databases enable users to add, modify, or delete information.
However, databases provide much more functionality than simply manipulating data. A database can allow authorized users to view specific information. Databases can also back up data automatically and on any type of time interval desired.
