Lifecycle assessment (LCA) and its application to sustainable waste management

Abstract:
This chapter deals with quantitative ways to compare waste treatment technologies. It introduces lifecycle analysis and details a lifecycle-based method to evaluate the sustainability of waste treatment systems. It concludes that cities need a mix of waste treatment technologies to manage municipal solid waste flows sustainably.
