Paintings with a focal point are more aesthetically pleasing. Focus points are areas or elements for the eyes to land on when looking at a painting. You can create a focal point by using your darkest dark or lightest light. You can also create contrasts with large and small shapes or through contrasting colors. Typically, the focal points will provide a path for your eye to explore the painting.

COMMON TYPES OF COMPOSITIONS

Rule of Thirds: When a painting is divided into thirds vertically and horizontally, the intersecting lines will typically have one or more focal points.
