7.2. Latency Reduction
In this section, we provide upper- and lower-bound estimates for the reduction in retrieval time (also known as latency savings or latency reduction) that one can expect from data caching by a current proxy. We also describe an often-overlooked source of latency savings, which is TCP connection caching. The savings derived from connection caching may actually overshadow the savings from data caching. We should note again that this section considers current proxies. There is ongoing research into improving the benefits of proxies, which we describe later in Chapters 13 and 17.
