17.2. Content Transcoding

The Internet explosion has led to a variety of consumer devices, from desktop computers to handheld devices such as the PalmPilot. These devices have different screen sizes, color capabilities, processing power, and supported graphics formats. Some devices may be unable to make use of content as it is provided by origin servers. These devices first download the content and then transform it locally to a lower-quality form. Since the lower-quality encoding is usually smaller, the time and bandwidth used for downloading high-quality content are wasted.
