17.6. The ICAP Protocol

The Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP) is a proposed protocol that allows a more distributed solution to the problem of extending the functionality of edge servers.[1] The basic concept is to offload custom processing from the edge server to a special ICAP server. Then the edge server has to be only slightly modified to remotely call the ICAP server in cases that require custom processing. This approach allows highly optimized appliances to be used for routine operation while maintaining a high level of flexibility in an ICAP server that is implemented in software on top of a standard operating system.
