One of the great holy grails of Web design is to build a perfectly transparent site—a site that works in every conceivable browsing device on every possible platform without sacrificing the interactive features and compelling visual design that Web audiences have come to expect.
It's a holy grail for a very good reason: You're not likely to achieve it in this lifetime. Browsers are simply too varied, and platforms are too incompatible. Computing technology as a whole is far too proprietary, and trade secrets, market shares, licensing programs, corporations, IPOs, and good old-fashioned greed-based economies ensure that it will remain this way.
