The Next Step: A Search Engine Flyover

A long, long time ago when the Earth was flat, search engines were relatively straightforward creatures. You entered your search query and you got a list of search results.

In the late 90s most search engines (Google was a notable exception) descended into Portal Madness: instead of a place to merely search the Web, search engines became places to get news, weather, sports scores, and other snippets of information.

Portal Madness has died down but there's still a lot of search complexity.
