Chapter 18. FINDING AUDIO ON THE WEB

I may lose all my street cred for this, but I'm going to go ahead and tell you anyway: I've never used Napster or any of those other music-swapping services. I know, big geek like me, you'd think I'd do all that peer-to-peer stuff. But I never did. However, that doesn't mean I've never had a use for music and sound online.

Ever since I used an early version of RealAudio cough years ago, I've loved sounds on the Internet. More and more these days that means music, but it can mean other sounds too—sound effects, quotes from television shows, and historical speeches, among other things.

Let's start at the beginning: sound formats.
