15.1. Recognized Leaders

Microsoft, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard (HP), are recognized as leading the effort for both furthering the web services economy and providing technologies to support it. In this chapter, we primarily focus on the technologies provided by the leaders.

15.1.1. Microsoft

Microsoft’s DOT NET (or .NET) is the first web service technology mentioned in this chapter because Microsoft — along with IBM, HP, and possibly Bowstreet — has taken a leadership role in defining what web services means and how to make them a reality. The DOT NET strategy is a significant change in the way software applications are constructed and deployed.
