After outstanding leadership, HAPIE companies require outstanding employees, those who are adaptive, enthusiastic, and emotionally intelligent. Emotional intelligence, a phrase introduced by Salovey and Mayer in 1990 and taken broadly into the world’s consciousness by Daniel Goleman in his 1995 book Emotional Intelligence, is an individual’s capacity for self-awareness, self-control, and empathy.
