So far, the discussion has focused primarily on internal matters: the attitudes and behaviors of corporate leaders and employees. It is time now to look outside. There is one final difference between ordinary business organizations and ones that are truly exceptional. The truly exceptional companies engage in positive ways with the world beyond their own walls. This strategy has two elements. The first is developing invigorated stakeholders, vendors, and clientele who serve as first-line marketers for the company, the I in HAPIE. The second is becoming an engaged, constructive community citizen, the E in HAPIE.
