This account of rehearsals conducted by Bertolt Brecht shows how much effort and patience can be used if there is time enough and talent enough to use it. These processes were fully exploited by Brecht, but only a highly subsidized theatre could work in this way today. Nevertheless, the questions explored, the patience shown in research and experiment, and the openness to suggestion are ingredients many other directors use during rehearsals. The collaboration between director and designer is perhaps the most often copied element of Brecht's process.
