In bookshops and libraries, students of theatre need to look in several different sections. Books about plays will often be shelved under LITERATURE, and so may the plays themselves. On the other hand, both kinds may be found in a DRAMA or DRAMATIC LITERATURE section, and studies of plays in yet another labeled CRITICISM. If there is a section called THEATRE, this is where all the books relevant to our subject ought to be found, but in practice they seldom are: acting, practical stagecraft, theatre histories, biographies, and picture books may be there, but not books about plays or criticism, or theory.
