For over 30 years, the masterful conducting of Herbert von Karajan (1908–1989) made the Berlin Philharmonic, which he led between 1955 and 1989, one of the most highly rated orchestras performing Wagner’s music. At the same time, Karajan also set new standards for the interpretation of the classical and romantic repertoire of concertos and orchestral works of Ludwig van Beethoven, Anton Bruckner, and Richard Strauss.
