Supplements – who needs what and why
For most people in good health, a well-balanced diet provides all the necessary nutrients. However, there is clear evidence that certain supplements are beneficial during pregnancy. Supplements containing folic acid and vitamin D are recommended for all pregnant women, irrespective of how well or badly they eat. Other supplements, such as iron tablets, should be taken during pregnancy only if blood tests show they are needed. Then there are multivitamin and mineral supplements and omega 3 capsules. The manufacturers would have you believe that every mum-to-be needs them, but it’s important to think about your own diet and to look at the evidence before deciding whether they are really for you.
