To end our journey together, I’d like to go back in time to introduce you to a special character from the late nineteenth century: Thomas C. Chamberlin.

Chamberlin, a geologist, was one of the first modern thinkers to warn against the danger of falling in love with your own theory. As he wrote in a Science article from 1890, back when academic journals still allowed for evocative language:*

The mind lingers with pleasure upon the facts that fall happily into the embrace of the theory, and feels a natural coldness ...
