A loss of focus can't always be blamed on the shifting sands of the market. More often than not, it's the fault of the company. Unfortunately, the ill effects of a gradual loss of focus are not always readily apparent, which makes the problem difficult to recognize and address.
Years ago I was a passenger in a vehicle that got into a head-on collision. Mercifully, everyone in our car walked away from the crash. I thought I had escaped unscathed until I awoke the next morning; every bone in my body ached. That's how it is with a loss of focus—feeling fine today doesn't mean that the consequences aren't coming down the road.
