The real world is not a pretty one nowadays. It is a world characterized by four major barrier forces: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. First highlighted by the U.S. Army War College and the National Defense University in alerting the armed forces to the nature of war fighting in the future, these are key characteristics of today’s performance environment. The acronym VUCA became a popular way of depicting the nature and impact of these forces, and was integrated into the lexicon of strategic thinking and planning.
