Emotional intelligence is perhaps most important to assess when leaders are moving into new roles with greater responsibility. In these situations, individuals often need to operate outside their comfort zones. For example, they might be called on to operate with constituencies with whom they have no experience. In other situations, they might have to maneuver a different culture or value system. Another case might involve moving between two organizations of different size, complexity, strategic challenge, or stages of development.
