Law F: Learn the Rules

Your project has to work within a cage of both man-made and natural laws; it is best to obey the former and, try as you might, it is impossible to break the latter.

The man-made rules within which a project has to be carried out are not always known or easily accessible by the participants, particularly in the case of export contracts, and even when known they are sometimes ­subject to varied local interpretation.

The natural laws, as defined by Isaac Newton and his ilk, should be known to specialists working within their own disciplines but they still may show features that can lurk, unsuspected, within a project’s specification and lead to problems and expensive delays.
