Introduction

The usable spectrum of electromagnetic radiation frequencies extends over a wide range. The lower frequencies are used primarily for terrestrial broadcasting and communications. The higher frequencies include visible and near-visible infrared and ultraviolet light, and x-rays. The standard frequency band designations are listed in Table 1.1 and Table 1.2. Alternate and more detailed subdivision of the VHF, UHF, SHF, and EHF bands is given in Table 1.3 and Table 1.4.

The primary bands of interest for radio communications are given in Table 1.5.
