A virtual machine (VM) program simulates the hardware functions of a computer within an application running on another computer. It lets you run an entire operating system as an application program so that you can work in various operating systems without rebooting. Virtualization has been used on big mainframe computers since the 1960s, and it is now also used on PCs and PC-type server computers.
