What use is a computer that doesn’t have Internet access? It’s odd to think that life wasn’t always this way, though I do remember how frustrating it was that my early computers—be they a Sinclair ZX81, ZX Spectrum and QL, Psion Series 3, 3a, and 5 handhelds, or an Olivetti 8086-based PC—couldn’t get access to the wider world. All this, of course, was before the World Wide Web (or even DARPANET as it was originally) was invented. Now, it’s impossible to think of a device that’s not online, from tablets and watches to the refrigerator in your kitchen.
