Using Windows alone is not enough to be productive or to have fun when using your computer. Yes, you can do plenty with the built-in apps and browse the web with Microsoft Edge, filling many hours of your day. However, you may need to work with all kinds of documents (such as PDF files) as well as cloud-storage apps not built into OneDrive, apps for viewing movies, desktop apps for unzipping file archives, and more.

Windows programs, or desktop apps, are downloaded by users from all over the internet, sometimes from illegal sources like torrents, using peer-to-peer file-sharing clients like eMule or Napster (are you also old enough to remember it?), and other times from legal and safe download sites like the Microsoft Download Center or Download.com.

The new and improved Microsoft Store has more apps than ever, but you still may not find there the programs you seek. And then comes the saga of searching for your favorite programs on the web, downloading them from a safe place, and confirming that they're safe.
