WINS
WINS is an integral part of Windows. It enables mapping of NetBIOS computer names to IP addresses, just as DNS enables mapping of DNS host names to IP addresses. Before Windows 2000, WINS was a requirement for Windows-based IP networks. WINS provided IP address resolution so that users could easily browse for network resources within a Windows NT Domain, without having to know the fully qualified DNS name or the IP address.
