Terminal Services

Synopsis

Configure Terminal Services, create client installation disks, establish a terminal session, install Terminal Services, install Terminal Services Client, manage and monitor terminal sessions, and terminate a terminal session.

Procedures

Installing Terminal Services on a Windows 2000 server adds four new consoles to the Administrative Tools program group:

  • Terminal Services Manager

  • Terminal Services Configuration

  • Terminal Services Licensing

  • Terminal Services Client Creator

The following procedures start with one of these consoles unless otherwise specified.

Configure Terminal Services

There are two nodes in the console tree of the Terminal Services Configuration console, as follows.

Connections

This lets you configure global settings for client connections to the terminal server. Double-click on a connection node to open its property sheet, then configure settings as desired. Of special importance here are:

General

Specify the level of encryption to be used to protect data from the client to the server. Using High requires the 128-bit encryption add-on to Windows 2000.

Logon Settings

Specify a user that can automatically log on using this connection.

Sessions

Configure timeout values for both active and idle sessions, and either disconnect the client or terminate the session when the limit is reached.

Environment

Configure wallpaper and a startup program for the client.
