5.2. Using Windows RE

The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) includes several tools that can be used to troubleshoot and recover a system. The WinRE is an extension of the Windows preinstallation environment (PE) covered in Chapter 2, "Automating the Deployment of Windows 7."

You can access the WinRE using the following methods:

  • Pressing F8 when booting to a Windows 7 installation

  • Booting with an installation DVD

  • Using bootable WinRE media

Once you boot into WinRE, you'll have access to the following tools:

  • Startup Repair Tool

  • System Restore

  • System Image Recovery

  • Windows Memory Diagnostic

  • Command Prompt
