Understanding WIM Files

Windows 7 uses the Windows Imaging Format (WIM) file-based disk image format for installations. A WIM file includes all of the files that are needed for an installation.

Older images were sector based instead of file based. Deploying a sector-based image onto a system would remove the entire contents of the drive where the image was deployed. A file-based image only installs the files and can preserve the existing structure of the system, including existing files. ...
