4.14. Split a Hard Drive into Two Partitions
You can create a separate storage area on your system by splitting your hard drive into two partitions.
In hard drive circles, a partition — also called a volume — is a subset of a hard drive that you can access and work with as a separate unit. Most hard drives consist of just a single partition that takes up the entire disk, and that partition is almost always drive C. However, it is possible to divide a single hard drive into two partitions and assign a drive letter to each — say, C and D.
