Finishing the Installation

For the final phase of the installation, Setup configures your hardware and takes you through a few tasks designed to configure Windows 98 the way you want. The next few sections run through each of these tasks.

Hardware Detection

After rebooting, Setup runs through its hardware detection phase in which it attempts to locate and configure both Plug and Play and legacy devices. (Setup runs the full hardware detection routine only if you're not upgrading from Windows 95.)

As Setup comes across particular devices, a wizard may show up to help you configure the hardware. For example, if your computer has one or more PC Card (PCMCIA) slots, the PC Card Wizard will make an appearance, as shown in Figure 2.9. (I discuss this ...
