Using FTP for Internet File Transfers

FTP sits just above TCP in the TCP/IP food chain. FTP's purpose in life is to coordinate file transfers to and from remote Internet sites. If you're just starting out on the Internet, for example, you can use FTP to download programs that enable you to access the services that interest you.

INTERNET EXPLORER AND FTP

If you just want to download files, you can use Internet Explorer. To do so, enter a URL that uses the following syntax:

ftp://domain/directory/filename

Here, domain is the domain name of the FTP server, directory is the full path of the directory you want to work with, and filename is the name of the file you want to download. If you leave off filename, Internet Explorer displays the contents ...
