Chapter 2. IPv6
Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) was standardized in 1981 (with the publication of RFC 791)—many years before the modern Internet materialized. Although the Internet community has found ways to work around many of IPv4’s shortcomings, a new version of the Layer 3 and 4 protocols, known as Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), will need to be adopted to allow the Internet to continue to grow in the decades to come.
IPv6 was included with the Windows XP SP1 and Windows Server 2003 operating systems as a core networking technology, but it was disabled by default.
