Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services Overview
Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) was formerly known as Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM). I use it to provide a directory service that can be used for directory-enabled applications without having the overhead of forests and domains. AD LDS is an LDAP directory service without the dependencies that are required for AD DS. This gives you flexible support for directory-enabled applications without requiring a domain with DCs, even though you have much the same functionality as with AD DS.
