What Server Roles Need to Be Backed Up?

Let’s start with one basic piece of maintenance: backups. What roles need to be backed up, and why?

Generally speaking, two server roles shouldn’t need to be backed up at all. Terminal servers should not have any per-user data on them. Ideally, you should be able to bring servers online quickly if they’re needed, but there shouldn’t be anything on them that needs to be backed up as such—just restored from the saved configuration so they’re identical to all other servers. Profiles may be cached, but the main profile is on a network share (that you should be backing up), and folders are also redirected so that users leave no personal data on the terminal server.
