The Microsoft iSCSI Software Target has a long history at Microsoft. Originally developed by String Bean Software as WinTarget before Microsoft acquired the company in 2006, for the last few years it has been available as part of Windows Storage Server. MSDN and TechNet subscribers have also been able to use it for development and testing, but without production support when they’re not using a Windows Storage Server SKU. However, since April 2011, Microsoft iSCSI Software Target version 3.3 has been made available to everyone as a free download, and it includes production support on a regular server running at least Windows Server 2008 R2.
