The hosts and lmhosts files are used for name resolution and are stored in the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc directory, as shown in Figure 5.12. The host files contain the mapping of IP addresses to hostnames and are used for DNS name resolution. Unlike hosts, the LAN manager hosts (lmhosts) file contain the mapping of IP addresses to computer names and is used for NetBIOS name resolution. In both files, entries are inserted manually, and each entry should be kept on an individual line:
