Chapter 21: Getting Help and Handling Advanced Support Issues
Restoring the Windows Vista Boot Sector
Windows Vista won’t start after you install an earlier version of the Windows operat-
ing system in a dual-boot configuration. This occurs because Windows Vista uses a
different startup method than earlier versions of Windows do. You must restore the
Windows Vista boot sector and allow dual boot by following these steps:
1. Click Start, click Accessories, right-click the command prompt, and then click
Run As Administrator.
2. Restore the Windows Vista boot code by typing the following command at a com-
mand prompt:
DriveLetter:\boot\Bootsect.exe –NT60 All, where DriveLetter is the
actual letter of the drive on which Windows Vista is installed.
3. Allow booting of the earlier operating system by typing the following com-
mands at a command prompt, where
DriveLetter is the actual letter of the drive
on which Windows Vista is installed:
DriveLetter:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit –create {ntldr} –d "Description for earlier
Windows version."
DriveLetter:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit –set {ntldr} device partition=DriveLetter:
DriveLetter:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit –set {ntldr} path \ntldr
DriveLetter:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit –displayorder {ntldr} –addlast
4. Restart the computer.
Removing an Incompatible Video Filter
If you are unable to start Windows Movie Maker, you may see a “Movie Maker has
stopped working” error message. In this case, an incompatible video filter probably
is installed on the computer. To resolve this problem, start Movie Maker in safe
mode, and then remove the incompatible video filter. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start
All Programs Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type
CD "c:\program files\movie maker", and then
press Enter.
3. Type
moviemk.exe /safemode, and then press Enter.
Windows Vista startup Windows Vista wont start after you install an earlier version of the Windows operating sys-
tem in a dual-boot configuration. See the next section, Restoring the Windows Vista Boot
Sector for more information.
Wireless adapters When running on battery, you experience connectivity or performance issues when you con-
nect to a wireless access point. This can occur if the wireless access point doesnt support the
802.11 power save protocol. To resolve this issue, connect the computer to a power source
or change the power saving options for the wireless adapter to use the Maximum Perfor-
mance power saving mode.
